Indigenous peoples have historically been overlooked and underrepresented in body image research. This chapter addresses this gap by reviewing the existing literature on body image in Indigenous populations, highlighting key contributions and identifying limitations of past research. We emphasise the importance of culture in shaping body image experiences and argue for the necessity of respectfully incorporating Indigenous worldviews and methodologies into body image research. We also underscore the need for strengths-based and culturally relevant research approaches. We conclude by outlining future research directions, advocating for a distinctions-based approach that respects the unique cultures and experiences of individual Indigenous groups. This chapter aims to advance the field by promoting a more inclusive and holistic understanding of body image in Indigenous populations.
